Life on the Road

Book tour map

When my first book came out, my husband and I did the next logical thing. Rented out our house, traded in two cars for an SUV that could handle Denver in February, and pulled our kids out of first and third grades to "car-school" them as we crisscrossed the country for seven months and 36,000 miles.

My publisher thought the author they'd signed had lost it. But when sales lit up like a string of light bulbs along our route—thanks to booksellers, librarians, book club leaders, and the most awesome independent publicity firm in existence—my publisher offered to help support a similar tour for book #2.

You can see what it was like to live on the road by watching these music videos!

By 2018 the kids were older and needed real teachers. #teachersrock I'd also changed publishers, and they wanted to be the ones who sent me on tour, which didn't include paying for three extra people to eat bbq in Memphis. I went out for a total of nine weeks, on my own and paired with other authors. No video of that unfortunately. There were some stellar moments.

Now I'm with Thomas & Mercer and the future of what touring will look like for me is still unfolding. What remains constant is my love of speaking to groups. People have called my talks one part book event, one part stand-up comedy, and one part inspiration. Drop me a line if you're interested and we'll talk about talking!
